Attention, bridge players: I will be teaching two series of classes, one for beginning players and another for intermediates, at Adobe Bridge Center beginning in November 2019.
Update: The classes described below have now taken place; I hope to resume the intermediate series in January or February 2020 but I haven’t settled on the details yet. The slide decks from these lectures, as well as information on upcoming classes (when I decide) are posted on my bridge lessons page.
The beginning class will be held on Wednesday mornings, starting Wednesday November 13. I’ll teach two classes in November, on the 13th and the 20th, and then we’ll take a break for Thanksgiving and for I (and you?) to attend the NABC in San Francisco; classes will resume December 11 and 18. After another break for the holiday period we’ll pick up again in January, with Barbara Rosenthal as the instructor.
Classes will be from 9 to 11 am, and will be held in the casita. Each class will be $10 per person. The text for the beginning classes will be Audrey Grant’s Bridge Basics 1, of which I will have some copies available for sale for $10.
The intermediate classes will be held Friday mornings, from 9 to 11 am. The first class will be November 8 and will feature food that some of our members (thank you, Barbie Corbett and Joan Merrill!) have very generously offered to provide. There will be no class the following week because of the Cactus Flower Non-Life Master Regional/Tucson Sectional tournament, so the second class will be November 20. After the Thanksgiving week I’ll pick things up again in December, probably on December 13 and 20 although I may hold one on December 6 as well. And if there seems to be continuing interest I’ll continue the series in January and beyond.
The topic of the first few classes is Should you bid one more: Improving your judgment about how high to go. The first two lessons will focus on constructive bidding decisions, including how to use losing trick count; the third and fourth will be about how to make better decisions in competitive auctions, including how and when to use the “law” of total tricks.
The intermediate classes will be held in the main building at Adobe Bridge Center. The cost to attend is $10 per person per session.
There is no required text for the intermediate classes; I’ll be using my own material, which will include printed handouts. I do suggest the following books if you’re interested in further reading, but please understand that they’re optional:
- Modern Losing Trick Count by Ron Klinger
- Complete Book on Hand Evaluation in Contract Bridge by Mike Lawrence
- To Bid or Not to Bid: The Law of Total Tricks by Larry Cohen
The Adobe Bridge Center is located at 401 East Limberlost Drive in Tucson. There’s plenty of parking available. More information on the club and everything it offers can be found on the web at www.BridgeWebs.com/adobe.
I hope to see you there!
